There has been a lot of talk about Miley Cyrus's new music video. In this video Miley is a caged bird singing about how she can't be tamed. Her outfit consists of something very similar to a one piece leather bathing suit. She wears long leather boots and feathers. In the beginning she has huge black wings. She breaks free from her cage which goes with her title "Can't Be Tamed".
The questions now are: Is Miley trying to be edgy? Is she trying to break free from the Disney Girl stereotype? Is she being a slut and not knowing it? Is she trying to grow up too fast?
The problem I have with Miley Cyrus is some of the outfits that she does decide to wear. Even when she is not in an exotic costume like this one she is in slutty short shorts, shirts that show off bras and dresses that are barely even there. It makes it seem that Miley doesn't believe beauty can be shown unless you are showing a lot of skin. People are also saying Miley is wearing clothes like this because she wants to be considered older and a stronger role model. Now in my opinion Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Shakira display female power, not to mention they're old enough that it's normal to show their bodies off a little. Also, the costumes they wear ARE edgy, not slutty. They are creative, crazy and fun. Miley wears shirts that show her bra and super short shorts (stuff that kids can easily imitate), that's not creative, that's slutty.
I have a slight problem with the way she does dress. Yes I know she is almost 18 and should decide what she wants to wear. Yes media says the world likes it but Miley is crossing the line between Edgy and Slutty. I think she could be considered a strong role model for younger girls if she reconsider her wardrobe.
